This map shows more than the title leads you to expect. Besides the polders of Rijnland and Amstelland, the Groot-waterschap Woerden has als been depicted. These three districts played an important part in the watermanagement of Central-Holland. The demarcation of their political boundaries did not proceed without problems. Utrecht depended on the Oude Rijn for its drainage but in times of extremely high water, the Hollanders put a dam in the river near Zwammerdam to keep Utrecht’s water out. A map of Rijnland and Amstelland had been published before by Hondius, Blaeu’s most important competitor. However, Blaeu did not Hesitate to copy the map and to include it in his Appendix.
